Learn about the history and techniques of different artists and art movements through practical creative lessons. We are delighted to offer a series of 5 week short courses, designed to give you bite-sized nuggets of art inspiration that you can apply to your own painting and drawing projects. This course is open to all and is suitable for absolute beginners and those who wish to develop their art practice in a social and creatively engaging environment. Every session will begin with an informal presentation and an introduction to a new theme. You will have the opportunity to view demonstrations and to explore new techniques at your own pace.

Autumn 1: 22nd, 29th September, 6th, 13th and 20th October

Theme: The Great Outdoors

  • Artists and their Gardens - be inspired by Impressionists Claude Monet and Berthe Morisot to create a painting in acrylics

  • Wondrous Woodlands - take inspiration from pastel drawings and oil paintings of Wolf Khan and create your own colourful imagery of trees

  • Fluid cityscapes - using watercolours and wax resist techniques, make architecture studies inspired by Friedensreich Hundertwasser

  • Expressive landscapes - Learn about David Hockney’s art making processes and produce your own painting of the British countryside in his style

  • Crumbling ruins - Create a mixed-media artwork of an old building that references the work of John Piper
